YUT QUARTET
Contemporary Jazz × Cantonese Opera
Stories, poetry and musical traditions from China and Italy, reimagined through contemporary jazz.
Founded by Hong Kong-born, Florence-based vocalist and composer Heidi Li, Yut Quartet creates contemporary jazz inspired by the melodic, rhythmic and dramatic language of Cantonese opera. Through original compositions and improvisation, the ensemble reimagines stories, poetry and musical traditions from China and Italy, moving between lyrical melody, theatrical storytelling and open improvisation.
Why “Yut” ?.,
“Yut” evokes 粵, representing Cantonese language and culture, while its homophone 越 means “to cross” or “go beyond.” Together, they reflect a project rooted in cultural memory but open to transformation and exchange.
Yut Quartet presents an original concert programme for voice, liuqin (Chinese pluked lute), piano, double bass and drums, moving between composed material, storytelling and improvisation.
Available for jazz festivals, theatres, world music programmes, cultural institutions and interdisciplinary events.
